Tester praises ballot initiative stating ‘corporations are not human beings’

Montana constitutional initiative will appear on Nov. 6 ballot

BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana farmer Jon Tester released the following statement after Montana’s Secretary of State today approved CI-166, a constitutional initiative stating that “corporations are not human beings with the same rights as human beings”:

“In Montana, people and their ideas—not corporations and their money—call the shots. I look forward to joining a majority of Montanans in November in supporting this important initiative because we know corporations are not people entitled to the same constitutional rights as people. And I will keep fighting this important battle for Montana’s values in the Senate.”

With signatures from more than 25,000 Montana voters, CI-166 easily cleared the required threshold for both signatures and legislative districts.

The initiative also charges Montana’s Congressional delegation with introducing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution “establishing that corporations are not human beings.”

Unlike Congressman Dennis Rehberg, Tester already supports overturning the unpopular U.S. Supreme Court Citizens United v. FEC through a constitutional amendment.

Rehberg has embraced the Citizens United decision, which allows corporations to spend unlimited money on elections with no transparency or accountability.
