The U.S. House on Thursday failed to pass a sweeping five-year farm bill with sharp cuts to food stamps, a surprising development that sets the stage for an uphill fight in Congress to craft a new law.

“Two years in a row, the Senate has passed a bipartisan, five-year plan that saves taxpayer dollars and preserves a strong safety net, and it’s high time for the House to get on board and support Montana’s No. 1 industry,” he said.
