Great Falls Tribune: Event’s opening day draws crowd

The Montana Agricultural and Industrial Expo in Great Falls is marking its 37th year by Jim Sargent’s count, but he said Thursday morning that a longtime attendee is sure it’s the 36th.

“We need a farm bill,” said Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., a featured guest at the show. The Senate passed a farm bill “but the House is not taking it up,” he said. A farm bill needs to protect food security, he said. “We need a good safety net.”

When crops are good, price supports may not be needed but when “production is down and prices are down,” supports are needed “to sustain food production.”

He also said he favors country-of-origin labeling (COOL) that informs consumers of the source of their food.
