Ravalli Republic: Blackfeet Nation, counties to spend $1.2M to boost Canadian border security
Ten Montana counties and the Blackfeet Nation will split $1.2 million for security on the state’s northern border.
U.S. Sen. Jon Tester on Tuesday announced this year’s funding level for Operation Stonegarden, a federal program to help local law enforcement agencies assist with border security and to strengthen coordination with federal agencies.
The money pays for personnel costs and equipment.
The Department of Homeland Security originally planned this year to allocate all of its Operation Stonegarden money to Southwestern border states, but relented after the outcry from lawmakers from northern states.
