Missoulian: Missoula, Kalispell mail processing center closures imminent

Closure of the U.S. Postal Service mail processing and distribution centers in Missoula and Kalispell went from a proposal in the midst of a public comment period to imminent Monday.

The announcement immediately raised the hackles of a U.S. senator, as well as a Victor business owner who relies on the U.S. mail.

The proposal to close the Missoula facility and cut 28 jobs has been unpopular from the beginning. And the news that cuts could come before the proposal has been fully vetted was decried Monday by Sen. Jon Tester, who said the Postal Service was “sidestepping due process and violating its legal obligation.”

Postal Service representatives were in town Nov. 29 for an informational presentation and public hearing on the proposal to close the Missoula facility. Karen Fredrickson, marketing manager for the Postal Service’s Dakotas district, said before the meeting that public comments on the proposal would be accepted until Dec. 14.
