The Billings Gazette: Rehberg, Tester help support soldiers
HELENA — Rep. Denny Rehberg’s offices in Helena, Missoula, Billings and Great Falls will again be donations centers for the Christmas for Our Troops program.
“When I visit our men and women in combat zones, they tell me how much they are lifted by these expressions of support from home,” Rehberg said.
The program, spearheaded by Montanans Supporting Soldiers, sends packages to service members who are overseas. Liann Meyer, who founded the program in 2003, said the group spends several thousand dollars each year shipping the boxes overseas.
Rehberg introduced legislation to provide free postage to families and friends of American troops serving in combat zones. If passed, the Correspondence With Our Heroes Act would provide postal benefits in the form of coupons or vouchers to soldiers’ family and friends.
Meanwhile, Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., took part in the American Red Cross’ annual Holiday Mail for Heroes this week, signing cards for service members, veterans and their families worldwide. “It is important for men and women serving our country away from home to know they are appreciated, especially during the holidays,” Tester said in a press release. “Sending a card is a small gesture to remind our troops that we’re always thinking of them.”
