Good morning–
We reached deep into the Groundhog Day goodie-bag and found this gem from way back in 1996, when Congressman Dennis Rehberg first ran for the U.S. Senate. Please take note of this part of Rehberg’s 1996 campaign flier:
Karl Rove is continuing his smear campaign against Jon in Montana. Rove is spending lots of his out-of-state special interest money on TV ads attacking Jon, and we wanted to share a few facts about Congressman Dennis Rehberg that Montanans need to know.

When I first received the email from Mamalode to join a group of Missoula moms and staff members to meet with Senator Jon Tester, I hesitated. Most of my life, I have remained on the passive side of anything contentious. I recognized early in life that if you want to deflect confrontation, the two subjects to avoid are politics and religion.
Dennis Rehberg’s Wall Street and Big Oil friends know that paying big money for TV ads is the only way they can distort the truth to smear Jon’s record. And sadly, they have plenty of money to spend. Karl Rove’s secretive organization, Crossroads GPS, is spending more than $300,000 on false TV ads in Montana.
It’s widely known that “wealthy Wall Street hedge fund and other investment managers” fund Crossroads GPS, so it’s no surprise they’re working for Dennis Rehberg and attacking Jon Tester. After all, Congressman Rehberg will serve their interests, and Jon serves Montana’s interests.
(HELENA, Mont.) -Montanans for Tester campaign manager Preston Elliott today released an online fact-check and the following statement after Karl Rove’s secretive organization Crossroads GPS released a new TV ad attacking Montana farmer Jon Tester, the only Senate Democrat who voted against the bailout of Wall Street, the bailout of the U.S. auto industry, and the bailout of Greece:
Dear Friend, I’m Preston Elliott, and I’ve just signed on as Jon’s campaign manager. I would tell you a little more about myself, but this just hit my inbox: Denny Rehberg to Announce Senate Bid Saturday – Roll Call, 1.31.11 Our race is now officially underway — please consider a secure online donation to show […]
“NRSC Executive Director Ron Jesmer said…that the committee believes there is ‘fertile ground for Republican gains in Montana.’” -The Hill, 12/29/10 Dear Friend, National Republicans think their path to a Senate majority is going to run through Montana. They’re already talking about our state because they see “fertile ground” for Republican gains. Well, you and […]
As I head for a work period in Montana this August, I encourage you all to listen past the noise on the sidelines and remember the facts: our team in the Senate is aggressively taking on the tough problems facing our state and our country and solving them.
While the other side of the aisle stands square in the way, saying “no” at every turn, Democrats in the Senate have stepped up and addressed the challenges our country is facing.
From the Recovery Act to health care reform, cleaning up Wall Street to middle class tax cuts, we have a lot to be proud of. Read more to see a list of our accomplishments just since last year.

Montana Democratic Party Platform Convention
Billings, MT
June 11, 2010
I want to start with a few important thank you’s. First to Jim Elliott and David Benson for the good work you do for all of Montana’s Democrats.
I also want to say a special thanks to all of the folks here who ran — or are still running — for public office. After Tuesday, some of you are moving on to a tough fight in November. Some of you are not.
What’s important is that from here forward, we’re all on the same page. And that we’re all working together.
