From the Groundhog’s Day goodie-bag, a shadow from Rehberg’s past
Good morning–
We reached deep into the Groundhog Day goodie-bag and found this gem from way back in 1996, when Congressman Dennis Rehberg first ran for the U.S. Senate. Please take note of this part of Rehberg’s 1996 campaign flier:
How times have changed! Because like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Congressman Rehberg voted to give himself a pay raise:
- In 2002 (by $4,700)
- …And again (by $3,400 in 2003)
- …And again (by $4,000 in 2004)
- …And again (by $3,100 in 2005)
- …And again (by $3,300 in 2006)
The full details of these five votes are online HERE.
Thanks to Rehberg’s votes, his salary has expanded $28,900 per year since he took office. Now, as one of the wealthiest members of Congress, he makes $174,000 per year.
In sharp contrast, Jon Tester has consistently opposed salary increases for members of Congress.
Enjoy Groundhog Day and the extra six weeks of moisture that will hopefully come with it!
