As a former elementary school teacher and school board chairman — and as a father and grandfather — Jon has never lost sight of his commitment to quality public education for all Montanans. His parents passed down the belief that quality public education is a cornerstone of our democracy.
Jon is a longtime critic of No Child Left Behind and the Race to the Top Program – the Administration’s plan to force schools to compete for federal funding. Jon believes one-size-fits-all education policies don’t always work for schools in rural America and has instead fought for a more flexible education plan that recognizes the needs of rural communities.
He also believes that all Montanans should have the option of going to college, and that higher education should be affordable.
That’s why expanding these opportunities — including vocational and technical education — is a priority for Jon. And it’s why he voted to keep federal student loan interest rates from doubling and fights to ensure strong funding for Pell Grants so the dream of a college education stays within reach.
