Standing Against Bailouts while Cutting The Debt

When it comes to cutting government spending, and the national deficit and debt, Jon has walked the walk.

Jon put his Montana common sense on display in 2008 when he bucked his party and became the only Senate Democrat to vote against both bailouts of Wall Street and the U.S. auto industry. He pointed to a lack of oversight and accountability for the bailout funds — especially in these tough economic times — and said simply, “I’m against bailouts.” He also helped write and pass the Wall Street reform law to end the era of “too big to fail” and the taxpayer bailouts that came with it.

Jon personally trimmed $6 billion from the unemployment insurance bill in 2010 by dialing back an emergency $25 increase to benefits. Jon killed an ineffective federal “Animal ID” program, saving an estimated $7 million.

Because he believes public service should be about improving lives, and not about a paycheck, Jon saved taxpayer dollars by helping to kill two pay raises for members of Congress, and helped pass legislation in the Senate that would repeal automatic Congressional pay raises. And Jon voted to support the creation of a bipartisan debt commission to cut government spending and rein in the deficit.
